Repairing Relationships for Success in Education

Discipline in schools today is far different than what it was when I attended school. Basically, school discipline has become lax over the years as our relationships have weakened between student and teacher, and between parent and child. Consolidated school systems and mega schools have made the separation between family and school wider than ever and the classroom sizes larger and larger; making it difficult for the teacher to connect with the students. These mega schools have also largely ignored the local community. Also, some parents have lost touch with their children for many different reasons outside the school system. For school discipline to be successful, we need to restore those relationships. Parents and schools need to work together to instill the importance of education into children of all ages. Finding discipline procedures that work is a job for students, parents, and teachers to explore together. In today's society, working together within the school and community will help teach children that working as a team can effectively solve problems.

  1. I totally agree with your post. I had the opportunity to attend both consolidated and non-consolidated school. It really made a difference beind a student in the smaller school. It was personal and everyone knew everyone. This made it almost feel like a family between the students and the teachers, which I personally think made the level of misbehaving lower than consolidated school systems (because it was like getting in trouble by a parent when you got in trouble with your teacher). I agree that bot the student and the parent as well as the teacher should come together and set expectations concerning behavior and disciplinary actions. Having all three parties involved, there is no room for miscommunication and therfor the level of misbehaving can stay low as if in the smaller schools.

  2. I totally agree with you. My younger sister is still in middle school which was just consolidated with a few other schools. The school is way to big and she is not used to the new "mega" school. It is not as one on one as you were saying and it makes it harder for the teacher and student to connect. My sister is a great student but after consolidating all the schools, school is a lot more chalenging for her. I think that you are right and we need to solve these issues. I enjoyed reading your blog and could really connect with you!

  3. The school I attended was a small town school. Everyone knew everyone. The kids knew most of the other kids. They knew the teachers. They knew their friend's parents. The teachers knew the kids and the kid's parents. Sadly, this isn't the case today. Classrooms are overcrowded (whether the school is consolidated or not). Teachers are stretched thin having to make accomodations and modifications to fit a variety of needs from "gifted" to students with behavior disorders, physical limitations or mental impairments. They don't have time to know the students and what's going on in their life or why they exhibit certain behaviors. Parents and educators definitely need to work together to keep the line of communication open in order to do what is best for the student.
